Included in this particular report, Roger makes an interesting observation alongside many others:

 

I am repeatedly told that the 23% increase in the rewards of FTSE company CEOs last year is because they deserve exceptional rewards for exceptional performance. In most cases the increase is a bonus because of earnings per share targets being met or exceeded. How have they delivered this? In essence by using shareholders money to buy back shares from the market. This reduces the number of shares in issue and therefore boosts EPS and triggers bonus payments. This is clever financial engineering but it in no way reflects business growth.
